The history of Arkhangelsk State University began in 1929 when the Arkhangelsk Forestry Engineering Institute (AFEI) was established to provide training for engineers in the Forest Economy and Timber Industry.
Since then, the Arkhangelsk Forestry Engineering Institute has undergone extensive developments; it acquired the status of University in 1994, and was renamed as Arkhangelsk State Technical University (ASTU).
The University provides training in 7 faculties, 4 Institutes : a) faculties of Forestry, Natural Resources, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Technology of Wood, Chemical Technology of Wood, Industrial Power Engineering, Construction; b) institutes of Economics, Finance and Business; Oil and Gas; Informational Technologies; Law.
The University also offers training in Translation, Interpretation and the theory of Translation. The Department of Translation was founded in 2002 with the aim of teaching linguistics and cross-cultural communication. Graduates receive the qualification, linguist - translator in any combination of the languages: English, German , French and Swedish.
The Department of Translation provides foreign-language training for students specializing in Translation and Interpretation, as well as for students studying at the Law, Chemistry, Natural Resources, Gas and Oil and other faculties and institutes. Qualified training of specialists is guaranteed by a high level of material-technical provision.
ASTU collaborates with higher educational institutions of Sweden, Finland, Norway, Great Britain, Germany, and other European academic institutions. ASTU participates in numerous international projects.

История Архангельского государственного технического университета началась в 1929г., когда для подготовки инженеров лесной промышленности был создан Архангельский государственный лесотехнический институт (АЛТИ). С тех пор многое изменилось: в 1994 г. институт приобрел статус университета. В состав университета входят 7 факультетов и 4 института: лесохозяйственный факультет, факультет природных ресурсов, механический факультет, факультет механической обработки древесины, химико-технологический факультет, факультет промышленной энергетики, строительный факультет; институт экономики, финансов и бизнеса, институт нефти и газа, институт информационных технологий, институт права.
Университет также готовит специалистов на отделении перевода и переводоведения. Отделение было основано в 2002 г. с целью обучения лингвистике и межкультурной коммуникации. Выпускники получают дипломы лингвистов-переводчиков английского, французского, немецкого и шведского языков. Отделение перевода и переводоведения предлагает и дополнительную профессиональную квалификацию переводчика студентам, обучающимся на химико-технологическом факультете, в институте нефти и газа, права и других. Высокий уровень материально-технического обеспечения позволяет проводить качественную подготовку специалистов. АГТУ сотрудничает с высшими учебными заведениями Швеции, Финляндии, Норвегии, Великобритании, Германии и других образовательных учреждений Европы. АГТУ принимает активное участие в многочисленных международных проектах.
